Pendant plus d'un demi-siècle, Frank Sinatra fut une légende du show-business international ; malgré ses éclipses, ses gaffes médiatiques et son association notoire avec la mafia, sa popularité ne s'est jamais démentie. Sa fameuse voix conjuguait deux qualités exceptionnelles : le naturel et l'immuabilité. De I'll Never Smile Again (1940) à I've Got you under my Skin (1956), ou encore My Way (1969), la musicalité du crooner s'accommoda ainsi, avec une déconcertante facilité, de toutes les mutations de la chanson populaire, durant un demi-siècle. Des big bands blancs des années 1940 aux enregistrements avec Count Basie et aux légendaires orchestrations de Nelson Riddle, de la comédie musicale classique aux rythmiques plus modernes de Quincy Jones, sa pérennité vocale est indémodable.
