Dernier représentant de la génération qui jette les fondations du jazz, Lionel Hampton est l'une des plus irrésistibles incarnations du dynamisme en musique. Le vocaliste ne laissera pas un souvenir impérissable. Au piano, à la batterie ou à la tête d'orchestres de taille et de qualité diverses, sa pétulance et son sens du spectacle ont en revanche enthousiasmé les foules. Mais c'est au vibraphone qu'il doit sa place dans l'histoire : il révélera en effet toutes les possibilités d'un instrument dont le rôle était jusque-là resté anecdotique. L'interprète y montre une invention, une fougue et une virtuosité inimaginables, ouvrant la voie à des personnalités qui, comme Milt Jackson ou Gary Burton, conduiront l'instrument sur d'autres chemins esthétiques.
Lionel Leo Hampton serait né à Louisville (Kentucky), probablement le 20 avril 1908, et non pas à Birmingham (Alabama) le 12 avril 1909, lieu et date qui sont mentionnés dans beaucoup de biographies, mais qui sont invalidés par un certificat de naissance découvert par le producteur et historien du jazz Phil Schaap dans les archives de Louisville.
