Durant quinze ans, de 1942 à 1957, The Archers participèrent au renouveau de la cinématographie britannique en concevant des films d'une grande qualité dramaturgique et plastique. Les « archers » en question, dont l'écusson était une cible piquée de huit flèches et sur laquelle venait se planter en son centre un dernier trait, étaient au nombre de deux : Michael Powell et Emeric Pressburger qui, bien que le premier réalisât et que le second écrivît, signaient le plus souvent conjointement leurs films.
Alors que l'essentiel du cinéma britannique se partageait entre réalisme documentaire et facture académique, le tandem concevait et réalisait des œuvres originales, flamboyantes et poétiques, fruits d'une imagination débordante et d'une volonté d'expérimentation permanente, tant en ce qui concerne la structure dramatique que la facture. La capacité d'invention narrative d'Emeric Pressburger trouvait son complément dans la créativité visuelle de Michael Powell qui précise : « Je pense que nos films étaient de la fantaisie de la part d'Emeric, prise au sérieux par moi. »
