4. Temps forts
Si McLaren-Mercedes, avec le Finlandais Mika Häkkinen et le Britannique David Coulthard, possède toujours de solides arguments, les ambitions de l'écurie Williams-B.M.W., qui a confié ses monoplaces à l'Allemand Ralph Schumacher et au Colombien Juan Pablo Montoya, méritent également d'être prises en compte. Néanmoins, la Scuderia Ferrari, où le rôle du Brésilien Rubens Barrichello consiste à nouveau à seconder l'Allemand Michael Schumacher, ne semble pas pouvoir laisser échapper un nouveau titre.
De fait, Michael Schumacher domine largement la saison en s'adjugeant neuf victoires. Dès le 19 août, en remportant le Grand Prix de Hongrie, il est mathématiquement sacré champion du monde. Le 2 septembre, il s'impose à l'occasion du Grand Prix de Belgique à Spa-Francorchamps, ce qui constitue sa cinquante-deuxième victoire. Il bat le record jusque-là détenu par le Français Alain Prost (51). Il s'adjugera encore le Grand Prix du Japon, le 14 octobre à Suzuka. Ce quatrième titre mondial a été acquis on ne peut plus nettement : le deuxième, David Coulthard, est relégué à 58 points.
